A solar battery in Newcastle typically costs between $4,750 and $16,000 installed, depending on usable capacity, brand, and how much work your switchboard needs. Most households choose a system between 10 and 15 kWh.

Two government incentives currently reduce that upfront cost, and both can be claimed on the same battery:

  • Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program — comes straight off your invoice at the point of sale. Around $258 per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh, so roughly $3,488 on a 13.5 kWh battery.
  • NSW Virtual Power Plant incentive — a one-off payment for connecting your battery to a VPP through an approved provider.

The federal rate drops on 1 January 2027, from 6.8 certificates per kWh to 5.7 — about $418 less on a 10 kWh battery. Your entitlement is set by installation date, not order date. See what you can claim.

What does a battery backup system actually do?

A battery stores the solar you generate during the day so you can use it at night, instead of exporting it for a low feed-in rate and buying it back at peak prices. That’s where most of the saving comes from.

It also keeps nominated circuits running through a blackout — usually the fridge, lighting and a few power points rather than the whole house. Which circuits you want covered is one of the first things we work out on site, because it affects both the battery choice and the switchboard work.

A Virtual Power Plant is a network of home batteries linked by smart software. When demand on the electricity grid peaks, your battery can export stored energy and earn you credits or payments.

Joining is voluntary, there’s no physical change to your system — only a software connection — and your own home’s power stays the priority at all times. It’s one of the more effective ways to earn an ongoing return from a battery, on top of any upfront incentive you qualify for.

Providers differ on payment rates, contract terms and how much battery access they require, and some ask you to switch electricity retailers. Worth comparing rather than taking the first offer.

Separately, NSW pays a one-off incentive for connecting an eligible battery to a Virtual Power Plant, calculated on usable capacity up to 28 kWh and priced through the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme rather than set at a fixed dollar figure.

The federal discount cannot be combined with the former NSW battery installation rebate, which closed on 30 June 2025. We handle the paperwork for both current programs.
