NSW Government Initiative
What Hunter Region homeowners need to know about the Home Energy Saver program and how to use it to go solar, add a battery, or upgrade your home energy for free financing.
The Program
If you've been putting off solar, a battery, or a heat pump because of the upfront cost, the NSW Government just removed one of the biggest barriers. The new Home Energy Saver program offers eligible homeowners interest-free loans of up to $15,000, repayable over up to 10 years, to fund a wide range of home electrification upgrades.
It's a $557 million state government initiative covering a wide range of upgrades not just solar. For homeowners across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Central Coast, and the Hunter Region, this is one of the most significant opportunities we've seen to upgrade your home's energy setup without paying interest.
To be eligible, your combined household taxable income needs to be $210,000 or less, and you need to own the property the upgrade is going into. The NSW Government expects the program to help more than 32,000 households across the state.

The Opportunity
This is not a standard finance product dressed up as a rebate. The interest saving is real, the program is funded, and the combination with existing federal rebates makes the numbers genuinely compelling.
A standard 10-year bank loan for $15,000 would typically cost around $2,400 in interest. The Home Energy Saver loan removes that cost entirely every dollar you repay goes toward the upgrade itself.
Any existing federal or NSW rebates get applied before your loan amount is calculated. So if you're going solar, the federal STC rebate comes off the price first, and the loan only needs to cover what's left.
Lower-income households and concession card holders will also have access to a separate discount of up to $4,000. If you qualify for both, you'd apply for the discount first and use the loan to cover what's left.
For a region like ours, where summer cooling and winter heating costs hit hard, pairing this loan with properly sized solar, a battery, or an efficient heat pump is one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make this year.
We'll walk you through what you're eligible for, what a properly sized system looks like for your home, and how the loan and rebates stack up against the cost.
